Leslie’s Spring Garden

If you were to ask me if I had any hobbies I would tell you, “oh you mean my kids?” Outside of work, which yes I’ll admit I can be a bit of an obsessive worker, I spend all my time at kid’s sports practices, games, driving them around, feeding them…I mean, you know the drill. It’s been a while since I’ve had a true hobby.

About 6 years ago, I had an amazing garden. There was something special about getting away from my phone, my motherly duties, and chores to just spend time in the dirt. I could get lost for hours, weeding, watering, picking, sweeping—spoken like a true mom eh? I just loved taking care of little plant babies, watching them grow, and soaking up that PNW sun.

Fast forward to now, for this year’s Mother’s Day, I asked my 4 boys (1 of those boys being my hubs) to help me relive that time I have been craving so much.

Well I’m here to tell you, they did and did it well!

Welcome to my New Happy Place

The boys built me gorgeous cedar boxes for my raised beds. They are sized at 10’ x 2’ x 3’. I decide not to paint or seal them because I love the way cedar ages and lasts forever.

These amazing flat, stone rocks have been at our home for a while now. They were leftover from a home project last year and I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of them. They were expensive and I hate throwing things away—and now I am happy I didn’t! They made a perfect walkway for my garden. Swoon!

We also lined the back of the garden with a picket fence so as the snap peas grow they can climb up the fence!

Lastly, I got a pot for each of my boys so they could plant their own flowers to grow & keep alive! They’ve been so serious about it, well at least the younger two (lol).

If you’re wondering what I planted, I picked items the kids (and let’s be real adults too) could easily pick and eat. We went with green beans, snap peas, strawberries, and peppers. I also grabbed seeds for the produce we eat throughout the week that I consider to be our essentials; spinach, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and cucumbers.

Looking back I know this will be one of my favorite memories shared with my kids. Pulling it all together as a family has been such a blessing to my heart and really gave us a goal to achieve during the stay at home order!

Are any of you currently maintaining gardens? I would love to hear more of your experience and what you’ve learned over the years!
